Happy Veterans Day!

Just thought we'd give our veterans some sugar.

Obama in Iraq with troops.jpgJust as the ladies on The View were reading the most hilarious exerpts from celebrity biographies, ABC News interrrupted programming with a special report. Damn.

The news was pretty important though.  President Obama stopped in Iraq Tuesday on his way back to the U.S. from Europe (more on his and Mrs. Obama's European tour later).  He spoke to about 700 troops, including Vice President Biden's son Beau, telling them that he and Michelle are working on providing additional resources for them.

"We have not forgotten what you have done, grateful for what you will do and as long as I'm in White House you will get support you need and the thanks you deserve," he said to the troops.

MTV News and the 51 MTV/Knight Foundation Street Team will air special reports on young veterans issues.  These reports will highlight stories of young veterans in their communities, focusing on the challenges of post traumatic stress disorder, lack of educational benefits, and the difficulties young veterans face as they struggle to acclimate back into civilian life.  In addition to these reports, MTV2 will broadcast the following specials:

6:00 pm - Iraq Uploaded

6:30 pm - True Life: I Live in Iraq

8:30 pm - True Life: I'm Shipping Out

9:30 pm - True Life: I'm Coming to America

10:30 pm - True Life: I'm a Civilian Again

John McCain and Barack Obama have each prepared special July 4th video messages in honor of our young troops that will air exclusively on MTV2 today. Recent MTV research shows that 70% of young adults 18 to 29 personally know someone who has fought in Iraq.

Young veterans share why they support and campaign for Barack Obama.

So when they're not...er....kinda busy, what do American soldiers do in Iraq?  Well, watch American Idol, of course!  Duh!

You can see what the troops think about last week's show over here.

The stars of Stop Loss, a drama about a soldier who returns from Iraq only to find that he has to go back, talked to real U.S. troops to prepare for their roles.  Ryan Phillippe shares what he learned from the toops in the video above.  Co-stars Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt also share their experiences with the troops here.

In the Navy

yves saint laurent uptown patent bag.jpg

Hearing about all of the festivities celebrating the U.S. Navy's 232nd birthday led us to do a little navy inspired shopping.  Why not?  We like blue.

And oh!  Look what we found!  The Uptown Patent Bag by Yves Saint Laurent.  And by patent, we mean gorgeous navy patent! How cool is that?

We love the polished look of the navy patent against the gold tone frame and hardware.  Do we love the $1,895.00 price tag?  Not so much... but we could be convinced.

The Navy may be tough, but this bag is fierce!!

On a more serious note, we want to send a shoutout to all the polichicks in the Navy and other branches of our military.  They bust their humps, risk their lives and miss their families every single day for our national security.  And we can't thank them enough.

Polichicks, no on likes to hear news like this...

From the Associated Press:

BAGHDAD - A U.S. attack killed 19 insurgents and 15 civilians, including nine children [and 6 women], northwest of the capital Thursday — one of the heaviest civilian death tolls in an American operation in recent months. The military said it was targeting senior leaders of al-Qaida in Iraq.

Tyra asked Barack to send a message to her brother and his fellow troops who are stationed in Afghanistan.  The clip below aired today on the Tyra Show.

Army Chief of Staff Gen. George Casey was on Capitol Hill yesterday.  He requested a meeting with lawmakers to warn that the Army is stretched so thin by the Iraq war that it cannot effectively respond to another conflict.   "The current demand for our forces exceeds the sustainable supply," he said.  Representative John M. McHugh, a New York Republican, said Casey's blunt testimony was "just downright frightening."

Terri Gurrola and daughter.jpgTerri Gurrolo is reunited with her daughter after serving in Iraq for 7 months.  We read on another blog that Terri got to spend only 2 weeks with her daughter before she had to go back to Iraq.  Now that must have been an excruciating goodbye.

Here's to our moms in the military!
