Daily Polichicks - Monday

Good morning, ladies!

There's a lot to tell today.

First and foremost, we must share the sad news that the legendary singer, actress, and style icon, Lena Horne, has passed away at 92.

Always a supporter of civil rights, Ms. Horne became an outspoken activist after performing at an Army base in 1945.  She looked into the audience and saw that German prisoners of war were given front seats to her performance, and American black soldiers were seated in the back. So not cool. [AP/Philly.com]

Let's have a moment of silence in honor of our sister's memory... [silence]....

We were lucky to have Ms. Horne as long as we did.

In other news, President Obama picked a new Supreme Court nominee, Betty White set the roof on fire at SNL, and life as a White House aide isn't all fun and parties (though it is partly that).  The deets are in your Daily Polichicks:

* President Obama nominated U.S. Solicitor General Elena Kagen to the U.S. Supreme Court Monday. If confirmed, Kagan will join women Justices Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Sonia Sotomayor on the bench.  This will be the first time in U.S. history that we have 3 women justices serving one time.  [Washington Post]

* Here's a look at the life and times of Obama's young staffers.  [New York Times Magazine]

*This is National Women's Health Week, so do all that healthy stuff you know you're supposed to do: examine your ta-tas, eat healthy food and so forth.  This week.  Next week, it's back to cupcakes and a tequila shots for breakfast!  [U.S. Government Women's Health Site]

* Okay, we can't leave without saying it:

Go Betty.  Go Betty.  Go Betty.

88 year old actress and comedienne Betty White hosted Saturday Night Live this past Saturday.  She brought the house down, and SNL ratings were the highest in 18 months.  Insiders say that it was the first time in the show's history that the cast and crew gave the host a standing ovation.  White was asked to host the show after fans on Facebook waged a campaign on her behalf. That's all for now.
